Emergence
What might the future look like if artists could change the world?

Calling all artists, performers, photographers, sculptors, writers, directors, producers, venue, stage and production managers, strategists, funders, visionaries and everyone else in the arts!

Creative practice for a sustainable future
Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, 28 October 2010
9.30am – 5pm, £15 (freelancers), £25 (organisations)

Emergence is a series of creative, interactive conferences for people working in the arts in Wales. It’s an opportunity to network, share ideas, ask questions and get tools for a more sustainable practice; to celebrate the anarchic and unpredictable spirit of art and learn practical ways in which artists can make a difference in these times of ecological, economic and social instability.

Emergence will create focus and momentum within the arts in Wales, with the intention of making the vision of a One Planet Wales real, relevant, attractive and achievable.

We will focus on two main themes: developing a low-carbon arts infrastructure, including the management and development of venues; and developing the role of the arts as a crucible of ideas and visions for a low-carbon One Planet Wales.

Features

  • Dr Simon Bilsborough presents the Welsh Assembly Government’s sustainable development scheme ‘One Wales: One Planet’ – a vision for a sustainable Wales
  • John McGarth, Artistic Director, National Theatre Wales, mediates a discussion on what One Wales One Planet means for the arts.
  • Paul Allen, Director of Centre for Alternative Technology, presents ‘Zero Carbon Britain’ and challenges artists to imagine a positive future
  • Alison Tickell, Director of Julie’s Bicycle, presents ‘Moving The Arts’ – tools for minimising the environmental impacts of touring bands, orchestras, theatre and dance productions – a must for producers, directors, venue, stage and production managers.
  • Paul Emmanuel’s Fleece Paintings – using a sustainable resource
  • Martin Powell, Performance Poet
  • ‘World Café’ - networking, inspiration and discussion

Deadline for registration 22nd October

This is the first of a number of Emergence events in Wales. Others are planned for Swansea, Caernarfon and Machynlleth in 2011, with the Caernarfon event conducted mainly in Welsh.

Each event will examine different cultural themes, such as: the role of the Welsh language; using sustainable materials; and the artist as a catalyst. International guests and contributors will tell the story of the journey to sustainability in other countries and cultures.
