The British Council connects people worldwide with learning opportunities and creative ideasfrom the UK and builds lasting relationships between the UK and other countries.
We have offices in 110 countries, 7,300 staff worldwide and a turnover of £430 million.
We manage a wide range of activity in the arts and creative industries (through Wales Arts International), education and training, English language teaching, governance, law and human rights, information and knowledge, science and technology.
We work with a range of partners within and outwith the UK, from public and private sectors to non-governmental organisations. We constantly seek new partnerships both in the UK and worldwide.
We are a non-departmental public body. We receive a grant-in-aid from the UK Government through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, but we operate independently.
The mission and purpose of the British Council is 'to build mutually beneficial relationships between the UK and other countries'.
In Wales we support this task through building particular Welsh strengths and interests into British Council programmes. This extends the mutual benefits to Wales and the people of Wales.
These programmes may be overseas and delivered through our offices in 110 countries in the broad fields of arts, education and governance. Or they may be in the shape of inward visits into Wales by performers, artists, and academic specialists and, of course, international students.
