What we do

Our work in Wales is governed by five strategic themes. These are:

Wales as a study destination and educational resource
Under this theme we aim to promote Wales as a study destination for international students. We build on the resources and opportunities provided by three partnerships: The Wales International Consortium of HEIs, our Association of accredited English language centres, and our international work at further education colleges with fforwm. We manage the Welsh Assembly Government's Welsh Language project in Patagonia, Argentina and support a Welsh Language Board Project in Canada, which looks at bi-lingualism.

Wales’ creativity and achievement in the Arts
Wales Arts International is a partnership between the British Council Wales and the Arts Council of Wales. Through the encouragement of projects and initiatives that enable international exchange and collaboration we aim to help build a dynamic international context to the arts in Wales. Wales Arts International works to support the promotion and development of professional practice across all artforms, providing information about the arts in Wales for cultural organisations and practitioners overseas and supporting international opportunities through our programmes and funding schemes.

Strengthening governance in Wales
We aim to identify international opportunities that will benefit from the particular areas of governance in Wales. These are, amongst others: equality of opportunity, sustainable development, media and democracy, the rule of law. Wherever possible we seek to fit these specialisms and experience into programmes being delivered by ourselves and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office overseas.

Profiling Welsh science
We want to begin providing international outreach opportunities in this sector with a specifically educational slant. At the moment, this is a new area of activity and relationships with partners and overseas projects are still being developed.

How do we do it?

More can be achieved with partners than alone. Our overseas offices identify programmes, projects and activities that will be enhanced by working with Wales. Our partnerships with Welsh specialist bodies and institutions ensures maximum relevance and benefit to all concerned.

Our major partners are:

Welsh Assembly Government, National Assembly for Wales
Arts Council of Wales
Higher Education Funding Council of Wales
Welsh Language Board
Welsh Books Council
fforwm
Wales Tourist Board

We also work with:

The Regional Training Network
All the Welsh Universities
Techniquest
10 Accredited English Language Centres in Wales
BBC Wales
Chapter Arts Centre
Thomson Foundation
Cultural Concerns
Commission for Racial Equality
