A link story
Development partnerships in higher education

In Vietnam we manage the Higher Education Links scheme on behalf of the British Government's Department for International Development. This scheme contributes to the development of Vietnamese higher education institutions by setting up long-term links between UK and Vietnamese institutions that involve reciprocal visits by academics and researchers.

We establish links in a wide range of developmental subject areas ranging from environmental research to education policy and management.

Our current programme includes
  • a link between the University of Stirling and the Research Institute for Aquaculture No 1 on fish farming techniques in rural Vietnam
  • a link between Hanoi School of Public Health and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to strengthen epidemiology training
  • a link between the University of York and the Institute of Social Sciences in Ho Chi Minh City on Evaluating Social impact of Equitization

The current programme is going to end in March 2006.

The Development Partnerships in Higher Education Programme (DEPHE)

A very good news that Vietnam has been included in 25 countries eligible for the new Development Partnerships in Higher Education programme (DEPHE), a replacement of the current HEL schemes. It is hoped that the new programme would be started in January 2006. Further information on the new programme will be announced shortly.

East Asia Higher Education Links Regional Workshop

A Regional HE Linhs Workshop organised at Hanoi Melia Hotel on 27 and 28 October 2005. The event is aimed to celebrate the success of the scheme over the past 25 years and to facilitate the network between specialists in the region and the UK in order to open up opportunities for future collaboration beyond the link regime. Over 50 Region and UK link co-ordinators (including previous and current links) attended the workshop. They are from Indonesia, Thailand, Philippine, the United Kingdom and Vietnam. Watch this space for further update on this exciting event.
