At the British Council our worldwide teaching philosophy is to complement our formal English lessons with cultural extra-curricular activities, tutorials and entertainment.
Hundreds of students from 4 top schools took part in the Ho Chi Minh City Camp. The camp was a joint initiative between the British Council, OCEP (Oxbridge Cultural Exchange Project) and the Youth Union in Ho Chi Minh city.
Le Hong Phong, Tran Dai Nghia, Nguyen Thuong Hien and Le Quy Don schools all took part, and students were fully immersed in an English-speaking environment. The aim of the camp is not to compete with existing English language lessons or other private tuition, but to offer a different ‘intensive’ experience where they can develop their spoken English.
Formal classes and tutorials were complemented by speech and drama, sports, arts and crafts, quizzes, treasure hunts, debates and a talent show.
Classes
A typical day would start off with two hours of formal English lessons, followed by a different topic in each class eg “Sport and Games”, “Geography”, “Countries of the World”, “Food and Nutrition”, “Fairytales”, “Poetry” and “Science”. The focus was on getting students motivated and practising their spoken English.
Speech and Drama
Special games and activities were designed to develop students’ oral and listening skills, and they worked towards a dramatic performance at the end of the camp.
Extra-curricular activities
In the afternoon teachers planned extra-curricular activities, depending on their individual talents and the facilities available at the Institute. All activities were in English so the students could learn as much in a singing or football class as in more formal lessons. Students choose their activities from football, rounders, rugby, singing and music, drama and arts and crafts.
In the second half of the afternoon different activities followed eg a UK film afternoon.
“This is the most exciting and cheerful summer holiday that I’ve ever had. All the great times I had will never fade from my mind.”
