UK – VN dialogue: Sustainable Development of Vocational Training – Meeting Global Economic Challenges

Date:        Friday, 14 January 2011, Hanoi, Vietnam
Venue:     Sofitel Plaza Hanoi, 1 Thanh Nien Road, Hanoi

On the occasion of the “Pathway to University Mission” to Vietnam, the British Council in partnership with the Vietnam General Department of Vocational Training (GDVT) will organise a dialogue on Sustainable Development of Vocational Training – Meeting Global Economic Challenges. The dialogue aims to provide opportunities:

  • for UK and Vietnam Colleges and relevant stakeholders to share best practice and success stories from developing market led Vocational Training provision.

  • for UK and Vietnam Colleges to share best practice and success stories on developing and implementing international strategies for cooperation.

  • for UK and Vietnam Colleges to explore  potential partnerships.

  • to foster dialogue between training providers and industry for better development of vocational training programmes that are industry led.

Background:

Skills for Employability is a British Council programme that promotes cultural relations; its central purpose is to develop international partnerships for the exchange of knowledge and ideas. Within the framework of this project, British Council and Vietnam Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for collaborative work in the Skills sector. The collaboration has been progressing very well with a series of successful partnerships between Vietnam and UK Colleges and institutions.

With current challenges of economic ups and downs, the role of Vocational Training in developing qualified human resources to sustain a nation economic competitiveness has never been so important. In addition, with the increase in global mobility, it is essential that Vocational Training is very much linked and driven by the demands of industry in terms of providing highly skilled and qualified human resources that are internationally mobile. This requires training providers to closely collaborate with industry to bring the latest skills and techniques into the training programme and to provide trainees with work-place relevant practical training. In addition, College partnerships and the exchange of knowledge and ideas across national boundaries has become an important part of the sustainable development of Colleges. This dialogue is part of a number of interventions that have been jointly organised by British Council Vietnam and the General Department of Vocational Training, Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs in support of the skills sector and partnerships between Vietnam and the UK.

Dialogue format

The workshop will consist of 1 plenary session sharing best practice of developing and implementing a sustainable development strategy for a UK College. This will be followed by a panel discussion on international partnerships and 4 workshops addressing specific areas of interest focussing on innovation in the classroom, market driven curriculum and programmes, international strategies and employer engagement in training.
