Background

This major programme is supported by the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office Global Opportunities Fund and the British Council in partnership with the Vietnam News Agency (VNA). It aims to strengthen the capacity of Vietnamese media through professional training, debating forums and visits to the UK to increase journalistic skills and provide opportunities for open discussion of key international and national issues.

We are very grateful for the excellent professional support of The Thomson Foundation in delivering training courses of the programme.

Resources corner
Two Media resource corners consisting of 38 key texts on General Media and specific sectors such as Television; Radio; Print and Internet, have been established at Information Centres in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh Cities. These resources are open to not only MediaNet participants but all visitors of the Centres

Creating opportunity for young media professionals

Who is MediaNet for?

The programme supports dynamic young current and international affairs journalists, and also editors and media lecturers.

58 journalists and reporters were selected for the MediaNet programme through open competition. They come from across Vietnam from a range of media - print, radio, TV and online newspapers.

What are the outcomes?

  • to set up a training and topical updating forum for journalists focussing on global key issues
  • minimum 40 journalists from print media, TV, radio and internet trained in modern journalism skills and updated on relevant international issues and developments
  • 100 journalists, editors and university lecturers have opportunity to join professional updates and debating forum on key international/national issues
  • Core group of journalists, editors and university lecturers take part in a study visit and shadowing attachment in the UK
  • a group of top VNA journalists and MediaNet participants receive Advanced English Language support from the British Council Vietnam
  • media resource corners at British Council Information Centre in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city for journalists to access current high quality education and training reference materials.
