What is the International Young Screen Entrepreneur Award 2010?

International Young Creative Entrepreneur (IYCE) Award Programme is an activity within the range of the “Creative Enterprises” project organized by the global British Council. There are currently nine awards across different sectors of the Creative Industries* such as music, design, fashion, communications, art performance, visual arts, etc. This is the second time Vietnam have participated in this award. The first time was in the fashion sector.

(*) The creative industries, according to the UK’s definition, include 13 sectors: advertising, architecture, the arts, antiques, crafts, design, fashion, film, interactive leisure software, music, the performing arts, publishing, software and computer services, media, television and radio.

What is the definition of Screen?

In the term ‘Screen’ we include feature film, documentary, shorts, television production, and animation.

  • Development, production, post-production
  • Distribution and/or sales
  • Exhibition –  cinema/venue and/or festival/event programming and management
  • Journalism (print and broadcast) and publishing
  • Marketing, internet websites/ web networks, public and media relations
  • Promotion, education and retail
  • Artist management
  • Consultants providing specialist services in any of the areas outlined

What are the qualities of a creative entrepreneur?

For the purpose of the awards programme, creative entrepreneurs should possess the following qualities:

Entrepreneurial ability

  • Risk taking
  • Passion for their creative sector
  • Corporate skills: Business acumen, commercial awareness and managerial ability with the end product of articulating a business vision and strategy
  • Interpersonal skills: Ability to sell an idea, negotiate and network

Leadership ability/potential to change their sector

  • Leadership ability: Have the vision to combine their creative and entrepreneurial skills to be a leader in their national creative community.  Ability to share the lessons of their IYCE experience with others.
  • Agent of change: ability to make a difference – as not merely successful in business terms but also intervenes in the domestic market to impact positively on its infrastructure.

Market awareness and understanding

  • Market awareness: Knowledge of the local market situation and their role in it
  • Ability to spot gaps within the market and exploit these opportunities into real solutions

Originality of ideas

  • Original ideas and the flexibility to develop these in a commercial context
  • Self confidence: Possess the focus and ambition to support their original ideas

International outlook and ability to network with the UK/globally

  • International outlook: The will and ability to develop a mutually beneficial culture of personal and professional engagement, collaboration and partnership with the UK, and to benefit from dialogue with other international participants.

Who can apply for the award?

In order to participate, entrants should:

  • be aged between 25-35 by 05 September 2010
  • be already working in the screen sector for a minimum of 3 years
  • be entrepreneurial and should have demonstrated their ability in the promotion of the screen sector in Vietnam in a commercial and/or public context
  • have the appropriate character, drive and ability to demonstrate their potential as a future leader of this sector in Vietnam
  • have good English Language skills

What can you obtain from the award?

The national winner will:

  • represent Vietnam in the International Competition in the UK in October 2010
  • receive a 10-12 day trip to the UK with opportunities to network with UK screen industry partners and winners from participating countries
  • participate in the prestigious ‘London Film Festival’
  • receive a Screen Award certificate

In order to apply, applicants need to submit the following by the deadline of 05 September 2010:

  • A fully-completed participation form.
  • An up to date CV.
  • A copy of ID card or valid passport.

When is the final date to apply?

Your application must be submitted to the British Council Ho Chi Minh City no later than 17:00, 05 September 2010 (according to the postal seal).

How is the selection process carried out?

The short-listing process will be carried out by the specialists of the British Council. The short-listed candidates will make a 20-miniute presentation and attend a 15-minute interview in English with the panel of judges within the period from 15 to 17 September 2010. Presentations and interviews delivered by candidates are required to focus on information regarding the national screen sector situation, their achievement in the screen industry and how this competition benefits them. Furthermore, candidates should demonstrate their entrepreneurial skills, leadership ability/potential to change their sector, market awareness and understanding, creative ability/originality of ideas and finally international outlook and the ability to network with the UK and globally.

When will the trip to the UK take place?

The national winner’s trip to the UK will take place from 10 to 21 October 2010.
