SCIENCE

Many of humankind’s most important scientific breakthroughs have been made in the UK, from Newton’s theories of motion and gravity to Crick’s involvement in the discovery of the DNA structure: from Darwin’s theory of evolution to Rutherford’s discovery of atomic structure; from Fred Sanger’s DNA sequencing technique to its application by Sir John Sulston to sequence the genome of whole organisms. The UK continues to be at the cutting edge of science and technology, and our achievements in these areas are vital to our economic prosperity, and quality of life.

The UK is also a world leader in scientific and technological innovation and creativity as well as in science communication and making science accessible to the general public.

British science in Vietnam

To introduce UK achievement in science to Vietnamese people, the British Council Vietnam has organised a series of activities including an interactive exhibition showcasing some of the incredible developments in science and gene technology in 2004, a campaign on climate change in Vietnam called 'Zero Carbon City' in 2005 and 2006.

Our programme for 2006 will be an ‘awareness-raising’ campaign about UK achievements in science and technology field.  We will organise a series of talks and debates on topics of interest in the field of Science and Technology led by UK speakers who work as science communicators to make the subjects accessible to general public.  We also arrange regular showing science documentaries on Vietnamese TV.

Competition on UK science achievements will be launched with some newspapers in order to raise awareness of Vietnamese people that UK is a leading country in science.
