ARTS FOR DEVELOPMENT

The UK is well known for its innovation and creativity in the field of 'arts for development' which is concerned with using different arts activities such as theatre, photography, dance and music to raise awareness of and promote specific social and development issues to increase the quality of life in the community.

Arts For Development in Vietnam

The British Council Vietnam’s initiative in Arts for Culture and Development (ACD) began in 2001 with a work done by theatre director Roger Chamberlain with students from the College of Film and Drama in Ho Chi Minh City who worked on a ‘Theatre for Development’ version of Romeo and Juliet, together with directors and actors from Vietnam who had become interested in Theatre for Development.

The British Council Vietnam also has a history of working in development with its projects with the David Glass Ensemble (The Lost Child).

Following two successful training workshops and pilot projects ‘Photovoice’ in 2004 involving artists and development practitioners in Vietnam, the British Council implemented a number of small-scale local projects which have emerged during the training period, such as: ‘Reaching Out’- a painting exhibition by an HIV affected artist and this multimedia exhibition ‘Only Images’.
