Cambridge Assessment has developed the English Literature Admissions Test (ELAT) on behalf of the University of Oxford. The ELAT is one 90 min essay comparing two or three items of prose or poetry.
STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper) is a well-established mathematics examination, which has been designed to test candidates on questions that are similar in style to undergraduate mathematics. It is used by the University of Cambridge as the basis for conditional offers. There are also a number of candidates who sit STEP papers as a challenge. Other universities may ask candidates to take STEP as part of their offer, candidates should consult with their university regarding which papers to take.
Cambridge Assessment is responsible for producing and marking STEP. It consists of three 3 hour examinations, STEP I, STEP II and STEP III. Candidates are usually required to sit either one or two of the examinations, depending on the requirements of the universities they have applied to. It is not possible to take STEP I and STEP III in the same year.
Students applying to the University of Oxford to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) will be required to take a pre-interview admission Test. The PPE Admissions Test will be administered by Cambridge Assessment. The PPE admissions test will help admissions tutors to assess whether candidates have the skills and aptitudes that are required to study PPE – for example, the ability to think critically, reason analytically, and use language accurately and effectively – without having to rely on any particular subject knowledge.
The TSA (University of Oxford) is a 2 hour test in 2 sections:
- Section 1: Designed to measure both problem solving and critical thinking skills (multiple choice) 90 mins
- Section 2: Writing Task 30 mins (Essay question).
that the PPE Admissions Test has been renamed the Thinking Skills Assessment Test (University of Oxford) due to another course from the University of Oxford (Economics & Management) deciding to adopt the test as part of their admissions process.
