Leadership and performance in higher
education management
Bath, 2–7 November 2003
This seminar explores the challenges faced by institutions in a competitive higher education environment. Planning and management of change, together with measurement and evaluation of performance, are especially demanding. This seminar examines and investigates these issues. Ways of providing a comparative advantage while facing competing demands and increasing obstacles are also explored.

The main topics include:

  • understanding the nature of good governance and management in the higher education sector
  • university autonomy: its meaning in a society of increasing external stakeholder influence
  • forms of leadership in a rapidly changing economic and political environment and different settings
  • strategic planning and evaluation
  • performance-based funding and measures of quality assurance
  • marketing higher education in a competitive global atmosphere
  • values, cultures and social well-being in the university community.
PARTICIPANT PROFILE
The seminar is particularly relevant to those leading and aspiring to lead their universities and colleges and those influencing higher education policy. It is of particular interest to rectors, presidents, vice-chancellors and to senior administrators and government officials from around the world, particularly from countries in which the higher education system is undergoing rapid change. Participants are encouraged to bring practical examples of good practice, achievement and difficulties they are experiencing to share in the time devoted to sharing these matters.
