ETTE
English for Teaching: Teaching for English

Reaching teachers across Central and South Asia

You love teaching …
but you’d like to improve your classroom English…
motivate your students more…
and get more opportunities for training or development…

Does this sound like you? If so, maybe ETTE is just what you’re looking for!

What is ETTE?

The English for Teaching: Teaching for English (ETTE) project is for teachers of English living in far flung areas in the Central and South Asia region. ETTE is particularly for teachers who have not yet benefited from training or development opportunities.

ETTE helps school teachers improve their performance in the classroom by enhancing their access to materials, methods and opportunities for their professional training and development.

Why get involved?

ETTE will help you:

  • get confidence in your classroom skills
  • improve your classroom English to help you teach English using English
  • get enough materials, ideas and information so that you can develop as a teacher.

If you are a teacher trainer with experience and ideas, ETTE could help you make a valuable contribution to your community by using your skills on an important project.

Which countries are participating?

The project involves ten countries in the Central and South Asia region: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Project partners will come from all the countries in the region and the UK.

What kinds of activities are included in ETTE?

ETTE is planning to run teacher training courses for teachers in all participating countries.

In the teacher training course, there will be an opportunity for you to learn more teaching ideas, share your experience with other teachers and immediately put new ideas into practice. There will also be EL corners where you can find teaching materials.

ETTE in Uzbekistan

ETTE project in Uzbekistan has got the Ministry’s interest and commitment. As part of the project, training has been conducted for a team of teacher trainers from In-service Teacher Training Institutes (INSETTI) around the country together with school inspectors from the local divisions of the Ministry of Public Education (MoPE).

The aim of the training was to introduce the ETTE teacher training course developed by the project for secondary school teachers of English to the INSETTI teacher trainers, who then will incorporate the ETTE course into the national teacher training programme.

All participants - 13 trainers from INSETTI and 10 school inspectors found this course extremely useful: “- I did not expect that the training would be so interesting and joyful.  I learnt the easiest way of teaching English” (Hilola Satvaldieva, teacher from Tashkent)

“– I have learned what I should remember during teaching. All these knowledge I’ll be able to use in my work. I’m ready to do my best to teach and share all these in my native place with teachers…” (Gulzira, teacher trainer from Nukus)

There are 14 INSETTIs in Uzbekistan and this course will run as a pilot from October 2009. As it is planned, the British Council has to reach 280 teachers in October alone and about 2000 teachers throughout the coming academic year.

The Ministry of Public Education now is considering how to adopt the ETTE model for teachers of other disciplines in the country.
