The English Reform project was initiated in 2005 and developed the new curriculum for in-service teacher training which has now been approved by the Ministry of higher and secondary specialised education of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The new programme is now run through key national In-service teacher training institutions in Tashkent, Samarkand and Andijan and benefitted 600 trainers and teachers from 40 institutions in Uzbekistan.
In 2008-09 the project began to work on the pre-service English teacher training curriculum for Uzbekistan. The project involves all 18 pre-service teacher training institutions in Uzbekistan and aims to develop new modules on language learning and teaching methodology for students.
In 2010 the project team has started developing another module of the curriculum aiming to raise students’ intercultural awareness.
To date the project has trained a strong team of material writers, curriculum developers, teacher trainers and developed new curriculum modules for Year 1 and Year 2; the pilots of the new curriculum are being run in pre-service teacher training institutions.
The project is an excellent example of partnership between Uzbek pre-service teacher training institutes, the University of East Anglia and Norwich Institute for Language Education.
Eventually every university, college and lyceum teacher of English as well as future English teacher will benefit from the project and will join the national network of teachers initiated by the Ministry of higher and secondary specialised education of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the British Council.
