The UCLA Institute of the Environment (IoE) is an innovative and vibrant intellectual community focused on the Environment. Its members and constituents represent every area of specialty that touches the environment, encompassing a broad array of academic disciplines, research interests, policy concerns and outreach avenues. They are connected by a common passion: how to unite to bring about positive, sustainable change to preserve our complex and interdependent world for generations to come.

THE EXHIBIT

A groundbreaking photographic exhibition highlighting the urgent need to combat environmental challenges at the local, national and global levels, NorthSouthEastWest chronicles the impact of climate change in communities from all parts of the globe, as seen through the lenses of ten of the world’s top photographers.

This NorthSouthEastWest exhibit is brought by the British Council USA in partnership with the UCLA Institute of the Environment and the GSA Sustainable Resource Center.  The exhibition is part of the British Council's global ZeroCarboncity initiative, a two-year campaign to raise awareness and stimulate debate about climate change and the challenges faced around the world.

PROGRAM OF EVENTS

Magnum Photographer Alex Majoli and Dr. Irene Lorenzoni of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research joined the event.  Mr. Majoli acted as a judge in the British Council USA Climate Change Photo Competition and Dr. Lorenzoni gave a lecture on meanings, interpretation, and communication of climate change.

Dr. Irene Lorenzoni of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research presented "Does Tomorrow Ever Come?  Meanings, Interpretations, and Communication of Climate Change."

PHOTO COMPETITION

The British Council USA invited amateur photographers in Southern California to submit photographs on the theme “Climate Change: Causes, Effects and Solutions in Los Angeles and Beyond.”

Held in honor of the joint British Council/Magnum Photography exhibition “NorthSouthEastWest: A 360º View of Climate Change” on display at the UCLA Institute of the Environment in March of 2006, the contest was judged by a representative of Magnum Photography.

The two grand prize winners in the Undergraduate and Graduate categories, respectively, are displayed above left.  Congratulations to Undergraduate Grand Prize Winner Joyce Lin and Graduate Grand Prize Winner Megan Burns.
