THE GREENWICH FORUM

Greenwich, London
January 17-20, 2007

The Greenwich Forum is part of a year-long project run by the British Council, led by our office in Switzerland, in partnership with the World Economic Forum.  The initiative provides an opportunity for individuals between the ages of 20-25 to discuss solutions to current problems in education and to share their vision for the future.

Sixty participants from 50 countries attended the January 2007 forum in Greenwich, London to discuss issues around tolerance and diversity in schools, colleges, and universities around the world. After hearing from a panel of education experts, participants worked together to consider ways to address current issues and to formulate their own ideas for the future of education across the globe.

At the closing session of the forum, participants selected six individuals from their group to represent them at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland from January 24-28, 2007.

ABOUT THE GREENWICH FORUM

The program takes place over five stages:

Stage 1 is an ongoing global conversation involving all of the 109 countries in which the British Council operates. Participants engage in online discussions via a blog.
Stage 2 was a debate at the Commonwealth Youth Summit in Johannesburg in December 2006.  This summit took place in tandem with the Commonwealth Education Ministers' Conference and included participants from all 56 Commonwealth countries.
Stage 3 was the Greenwich Summit, which took place in the UNESCO World Heritage Site area of London from January 17-20, 2007.

As part of their program, participants were also involved in a range of community education projects at the University of East London, St. Ethelburga's, Spitalfields and Charlton Athletic FC.  These activities served to enhance their awareness of the ways in which education in a variety of settings can help foster inclusivity, tolerance, and diversity in society.

Stage 4 took place at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, from January 24-28, 2007.

At a session chaired by Jonathan Charles of the BBC, participants presented the solutions they identified to a panel of world leaders, international institutions, businesses, NGOs, and universities.

Stage 5 will occur through 2007.  Events included the World Conference on Modern Universities at Oxford in April and the Mediterranean Universities' Forum in Alexandria in June.

Participants will return to the World Economic Forum Meeting in January 2008 to report on progress made throughout the year.
