Extending your leave to remain in the UK

It is vital that all international students get the correct leave to remain before they leave for their studies. If you are a US student and you need to stay in the UK to complete your studies past the date stamped on your passport, you will need to apply to extend your leave to remain.

Your application for an extension must be made through the Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND) of the Home Office. You can access the correct application form, FLS(S), current fee information, and application instructions on the IND website.

UKCOSA: The Council for International Education has published helpful instructions on extending your leave to remain.

Please note: the charges for applications for 'Leave to Remain' (visa extensions) increased effective April 1, 2005. Charges for international students are £295 (convert currency) for a postal application and £500 (convert currency) for the 'premium' in person service.
