Many UK courses and programs now are available through distance learning, allowing students access to a UK education, with its prestige and reputation, without leaving home.
What can I study? There are a wide range of courses including both undergraduate and graduate programs.
How long do courses take? Most programs are very flexible and you can choose your own pace. The minimum time for a degree program is three years, but some degrees can be taken over as long as eight years. Graduate students usually complete their course in a minimum of two years and a maximum of five.
Who offers distance learning? The range of institutions offering distance learning is almost as varied as the kinds of courses available. To search for programs, please visit our UK Program Database and choose the "distance/online" option under "type of attendance."
To start you off on your search, below is a list of some universities that have significant numbers of students enrolled on Distance Learning programs. Please note that the British Council does not endorse any of the program providers.
What are the entry requirements? Entrance requirements vary depending on the course. For detailed entry requirements, you will need to contact the relevant institutions. Applications are usually made directly to the institution. Some courses let you join throughout the year.
How can I ensure that the course is recognized? The Open and Distance Learning Council is the only officially recognized UK organization that approves distance learning courses. Accreditation is only granted to institutions that meet its standards. Distance learning courses offered by universities are subject to quality checks by the Quality Assurance Agency in the same way as their UK-based course provision.
Before enrolling in a course, you should make sure it is from a recognized UK university of college. You can find a list of recognized institutions on the Department for Education and Skills website. There is an additional level of accreditation for some subjects, such as MBA or business courses, through specialist bodies such as the Association of MBAs (AMBA) or the European Foundation for Management Development (EQUIS).
Would a UK distance learning qualification (or degree) be recognized in other countries? Students need to satisfy themselves that the qualification (or degree) that they are studying suits their purposes and will be recognized. The best way to see whether a distance learning qualification would help you in your current career, or in the career you want to pursue, is by checking with professional bodies, prospective employers or higher education institutions. Some professional associations require students to complete recognized training in addition to an educational course before admitting them to their membership.
