"A year abroad enables you to step out of your own culture and examine it from a different perspective."
Student Unions
Eric Orlowsky, University of Leeds

One of the most remarkable aspects about a year in Leeds is the variety of opportunities available here. For some, the chance to explore all that England has to offer is very enticing. Others are attracted by meeting various people from across the globe. Still others are drawn by the quality academic programs the university has to offer. All the above reasons played a factor in my decision to come here and have helped to make this a rewarding experience.

When I first arrived in England, I had the chance to visit nearby York. After walking around a city which once played host to the Roman Empire and the Viking settlers, I began to appreciate this country's history and tradition. From the history and beauty of Yorkshire to the pageantry and excitement of London, England has a wide array of experiences. Leeds, itself, is not without its own merit. With all its clubs and pubs, Leeds caters to the lifestyles of English students. The downtown has a variety of shops and restaurants. Also, you may even get to sample many of the English "delicacies" from curries to traditional fish and chips. After five months here, my only regret is that I didn't have more time to experience more of it.

After overcoming the initial culture shock of the various accents and cars driving on the "wrong" side of the road, I adjusted to my new surrounding and began to meet people. By getting to know people from my host country I realized that we're all basically the same despite some outward differences. From school to friends to relationships, English students deal with the same issues we do back home. One of the most rewarding experiences is being able to begin to understand another culture from the inside out. Plus, a year abroad enables you to step out of your own culture and examine it from a different perspective.

Last but not least, the university's various departments offer a wide selection to accommodate many disciplines from art history to textile engineering. Being one of England's largest and most popular universities, Leeds has numerous academic resources.

For some, the idea of a year abroad might seem daunting. The prospect of leaving your family, friends and home university might seem bit too risky, but let me just say anything worth doing usually is. For those who look at their education as merely a means to an end, this experience is not for you. A year abroad challenges you as an individual in more ways than you could previously imagine. In the end, those challenges turn into rewarding and memorable experiences. With all that Leeds has to offer, you can not only continue your education but work at exploring your dreams.
