Much of the filming and production of the Harry Potter movies took place in the United Kingdom, often near or at a UK university. A few of the university settings include:
• The hallways of Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were filmed in Gloucestershire Cathedral, which is very close to the University of Gloucestershire.
• Students at the University of Leeds live close to the Goathland railway station, which is on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and was used as the location for Hogsmeade station in the Harry Potter films.
• Alnwick Castle, the famous film location of Hogwart's School, is about 30 minutes by road from Newcastle University.
• Durham Cathedral, near Durham University, was used in the first two Harry Potter films for both interior and exterior views of Hogwarts. The cathedral’s chapter house was also used for the scenes in McGonagall's classroom.
• Oxford University was a major filming location for all of the Harry Potter films. The university’s Bodleian Library was used for a number of scenes including the Hogwarts School hospital scenes.
