The British Council makes a copy of your original educational document, embosses it with a "British Council USA" stamp and verifies that it is a “true copy of an original document.” Certification costs $30 per document, which includes two certified copies. Additional copies are charged at $3.00 each.
No, the British Council does not validate or authenticate degrees. For information on legalisation certificates you must contact the Legalisation Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The British Council USA only certifies the following types of educational documents:
• Degree certificates and transcripts from a UK university or institution accredited by the UK Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.
• Degree certificates and transcripts from a US university or institution accredited by the US Department of Education.
We cannot certify educational documents from countries other than the UK or US.
Payment can be made online through PayPal, a secure payment website. Unfortunately we cannot accept cash, checks or money orders as a form of payment for this service.

Please include in this mailing:
• A completed copy of the Document Certification Request Form
• A pre-paid and self-addressed envelope from the US Postal Service, or UPS –OR–UPS airbill with account number. Please note that we are unable to return documents via DHL and FedEx.
• A copy of your PayPal payment confirmation
• A copy of your valid passport or US driver's license
Please allow two weeks for your document to be processed and returned. You must remove all documents from their frames; the British Council will immediately return any documents arriving framed without making certified copies. We will not remove diplomas from frames or be responsible for frames broken during transit to or from the British Council.
The British Council is located within the British Embassy; therefore, due to security restrictions all document certifications must be mailed to the above address. We are unable to accept documents delivered in person.

Unlike other British Council offices around the world, the British Council USA regrets that we do not offer examination services. Our offices, located in the British Embassy in Washington, DC, and the British Consulate Los Angeles, are not open to the public for security reasons. Unfortunately, British Consulate offices in the United States do not have the capacity to invigilate examinations either.
We recommend you consult the Consortium for College Testing for participants in your area. You will find contact details, fees and test center information at the above website.
You should also contact the public universities in the state in which you reside to find out if they have examination facilities on their campus. Contact information for US universities, by state, can be found at http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ/state/.
