Punchdrunk are acknowledged pioneers of a new form of “immersive theater” where roaming audiences guide themselves through deeply atmospheric worlds. Blending classic texts, award-winning design installation and extraordinary sites, Punchdrunk transports viewers from the traditionally passive form of conventional theater to a state of active imagination and engagement.
Premiering in the weeks before Halloween, American Repertory Theater presented Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More, an event inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth and told through the lens of a Hitchcock thriller. An entire disused building was regenerated and transformed into a sprawling, spooky labyrinth audiences were free to explore. Part art installation, part performance art and part haunted house, Sleep No More is an unnerving and fascinating introduction to the thriving contemporary British practice of site-specific theater.
Punchdrunk creates magic….A world so haunting that you feel as if you have entered a parallel universe. The Guardian
