COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

For each of their unique projects Punchdrunk relies on a local, trained volunteer corps which provides support throughout the performance run. A.R.T.’s close ties with Harvard University allow students and the Cambridge community to participate in this collaborative effort.

The rate of arts volunteerism in the US and the UK is roughly equal, with 5% of Brits and 4.3% of Americans in 2007/2008 participating, according to studies by the Cabinet Office and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Arts volunteerism in the States is highest among 16 to 24 year-olds, while in the UK the 16 to 24 and 65+ age groups are roughly equivalent in their committment to service and the arts. For more information about US arts volunteerism visit Americans for the Arts.

SITE-SPECIFIC THEATER

Punchdrunk is one of the most prominent UK companies exploring the contemporary practice of site-specific theater, an unconventional approach to staging and involving audiences in a direct way with performance work. See the Scottish Arts Council's overview of this field - earlier this year the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center at CUNY in New York held an international symposium to explore more..

The ghosts of Shakespeare and Hitchcock are haunting Boston this October in Sleep No More, the American debut from British theater company Punchdrunk.

Punchdrunk are acknowledged pioneers of a new form of “immersive theater” where roaming audiences guide themselves through deeply atmospheric worlds. Blending classic texts, award-winning design installation and extraordinary sites, Punchdrunk transports viewers from the traditionally passive form of conventional theater to a state of active imagination and engagement.

Just in time for Halloween, American Repertory Theater presents Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More, an event inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth and told through the lens of a Hitchcock thriller. An entire disused building has been regenerated and transformed into a sprawling, spooky labyrinth audiences are free to explore. Part art installation, part performance art and part haunted house, Sleep No More is an unnerving and fascinating introduction to the thriving contemporary British practice of site-specific theater.

Punchdrunk creates magic….A world so haunting that you feel as if you have entered a parallel universe.
