the black atlantic project
a transatlantic music and cultural exchange

Explore black culture on two continents through The Black Atlantic Project - we've brought the UK and the US closer through shared music and culture, leapfrogging across the pond in our multi-stage cultural exchange project.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Curated by renowned UK producer Charlie Dark, The Black Atlantic Project involves a musical dialogue between an assortment of British and American musicmakers. An original composition by Dark forms the base of a chain of musical remixes and exchanges, passed from artist to artist back and forth across the Atlantic. The music builds, blends and evolves as it travels, becoming both a game of “Telephone” and a creative conversation among contemporary musicians working across genres. The remixed tracks are accompanied by “cultural capsules:” token items, 'voice' letters and photographs from each of the musicians that give a tangible snapshot of their life and creative process.

THE EXHIBITION

The Black Atlantic Project was originally presented in summer 2006 at the Studio Museum in Harlem and toured the US and the UK in 2007.

VIRTUAL SOUND

Although the project and exhibition tour has now concluded, you can listen to streaming music and commentary by every artist in the project online.
