We know it's spring when the flowers are out, the forecast is rainy, and Daylight Savings Time makes the day just a little bit longer. 2008 marks the 38th anniversary of Earth Day in the United States. Across the country, tree plantings, recycling initiatives, and community cleanups are just a few ways we'll be renewing our pledge to the planet.
Keen to go green? Whether you're resident in one of the 50 states or live in England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, here are 5 ways you can go green wherever you are:
1. Don't light up. Turn off the lights when you leave a room and cut down on your electricity use. 2. Eat your veggies. Pay a visit to your local farmer's market and pick up some pesticide-free produce. 3. Send an email. Online letters and bill-pay options aren't just faster, they reduce your paper waste. 4. Listen to your mother. She's right: the old phrase, "reduce, reuse, recycle," is truer than ever. 5. Clean up. Pitch in at a neighborhood clean-up to beautify a local park - you'll make some friends and make a difference.

Learn more about their workshop and what's coming next as they prepare to present a challenge to Environment Ministers at the Youth Portion of the G8 Summit in Kobe, Japan, next month. |

Aspiring ecologists and biologists take note: UK universities are renowned for the excellence of their science programs. But it's not just the science: whether you're a scholar in cultural studies or a philosopher-in-training, UK academic institutions both challenge and inspire. American undergrads considering a UK Master's degree are eligible for the Marshall Scholarship, an annual award established by the British government in 1953 to celebrate the implementation of the European Recovery Plan, or the Marshall Plan. The Scholarship provides a living allowance in addition to full tuition costs for up to 45 Americans to study at any UK universities. Want to know more? Check out our website for full eligibility criteria and application details. |
