student e-news - April 2007

           April 2007

Summer has the longest days of the year - so find some ways to fill the space with ideas
and events that are a bit out of the box.

Want to stay in school? Consider a change of scenery - the UK is just across the pond,
and whether you're an aspiring artist, up-and-coming statesman, or scientist-in-training,
take your pick of summer programs at one of the many UK universities which open their
doors to high school students. Who says summer school is no fun?

If you're already in the UK, why not stick around? From May 1st, international students
who graduate from UK universities will have the option to stay on and transition their
academic know-how into career experience abroad. Learn more about the International
Graduate Scheme, and get a job after you get your degree.

You can start your summer now with some stateside attractions sure to
please. Give the planet her due on Earth Day with a look at the climate change photos in
our NorthSouthEastWest exhibit, listen to the transatlantic game of "Telephone" with
The Black Atlantic Project, or learn more about Bernardine Evaristo, one of our UK
Writers-in-Residence. And don't forget to say happy birthday to Jamestown, which
celebrates its 400th anniversary this year.

Start thinking ahead to summer - those dog days will be here before you know it!

Craving some UK culture during the Jamestown celebrations?
Don't miss hearing UK author Bernardine Evaristo read from
her unique novels-in-verse as she visits Norfolk State
University. Bernardine comes to Virginia through the British
Council's UK Writer-in-Residence Program - full details on
Bernardine's past work and free public events are available

Keen to go green this April? Ring in Earth Day with a look at
our NorthSouthEastWest exhibition, which makes the final
stop of its US tour at the Clinton Foundation in Little Rock,
Arkansas. The exhibit, developed by the British Council in
partnership with The Climate Group and Magnum Photos,
provides snapshots of climate change and its effects, as well
as ways to reduce carbon emissions in communities around
the globe. Get informed, be inspired, and make a difference.

Atlantic Project, launching a transatlantic tour in an
exhibition at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk. Explore
black culture on two continents through a unique sound art
exhibition featuring contemporary music in a "Telephone"
game between UK and US DJs. Can't make it to Virginia? You
can listen to music from each project artist streaming live
           online!

So, the UK - to go or not to go? Win a trip to the UK, with
