UK Remains Top Destination for American Students Studying Abroad

WASHINGTON, November 13 – The United Kingdom remains the top destination for US students who study abroad, according to the Open Doors report released today by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

More than 32,000 US students earned credit for studying abroad at universities in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, according to study data from 2004-05. These students comprise more than 15 percent of all study abroad undertaken by US students as measured by IIE’s Open Doors Report.  Historically, the UK is the most popular study-abroad destination for US students.

“US students who choose to study in the UK reap a wide variety of benefits,” said Sharon Memis, director of the British Council USA, the United Kingdom's international organization for educational and cultural relations.  “They get to experience a diverse culture, attend universities with high standards and select from a variety of college programs.  At the same time, they can enjoy learning in a common language and easily travel to other European countries.”

Students planning to study in the United Kingdom can choose from 180 degree-awarding institutions offering 14,000 programs. The British Council USA website provides comprehensive information on available UK study abroad programs, as well as undergraduate and graduate degrees, available scholarships and other funding options, visa requirements and student life.

According to Open Doors 2006, 205,983 Americans went on international programs for college credit, a 144 percent increase since the first survey in 1994-95.  A complete copy of the IIE release is available at http://www.opendoors.iienetwork.org.
