The purpose of this course is to improve usage and understanding of the language of Law through English. Through a wide variety of legal and law related texts students will learn the reading, vocabulary, writing and listening skills necessary to work on legal materials.
We are running two Legal English courses:
We are pleased to announce a new Legal English course at CEF Level B1.0 (British Council Level 7) starting in September 2009. The course is of 48 hours duration and will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 19:30 to 21:30.
The course is aimed at qualified lawyers and Law students and the goals of the course are to:
- improve the ability to write common legal texts
- improve legal English reading comprehension skills
- improve the ability to use legal English in a spoken context
- analyse language functions common to legal texts
- expand participants’ knowledge of key legal terms in English.
The topics which will be covered in the course are:
- Legal careers
- Contract Law
- Tort Law
- Criminal Law
- Company Law.
Existing students who have completed Level 6 at the British Council are eligible to participate in this course; new students are required to take a placement test to determine whether or not they have the necessary level. On completing the course, students can move on to Legal English Level 8, which will start in December.
English for Lawyers course is intended for anybody who has a special interest in law and needs to use the English of Law for their studies or work. It is also suitable for those students wishing to take the ILEC (International Legal English Certificate) exam; it includes a relevant exam practice.

- Contracts
- Employment Law
- Property Law
- Intellectual property
- Competition Law
- International Legal English Certificate practice.
