"I want Britain to be a leading player in this coming green industrial revolution" Rt Hon Tony Blair MP, Prime Minister
The past 20 years have seen a growing realisation that the current model of development is unsustainable. In other words we are living beyond our means. The increasing stress we put on the resources and environmental systems such as water, land and air makes the future very uncertain. Sustainable development integrates economic growth, social development and environmental protection. The goal of sustainable development is to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life without compromising the quality of life of future generations.
The UK government is promoting sustainable development of the community aiming to protect and enhance the physical and natural environment, and use resources and energy as efficiently as possible. UK sustainable development strategy “Securing the Future” can be found here. British Council works to promote a sustainable lifestyle in Ukraine and to create a greater awareness of the issue for the wider public. Please download the guide “Sustainable Development of the community: role of education”.
Recently released by the UK government “Energy challenge” report (pdf format) has identified two major long-term challenges: tackling climate change by reducing carbon dioxide emissions and delivery of secure, clean energy at affordable prices. Similar challenges can be identified for the Ukrainian economy as well. British Council brings the best UK experience to optimize the use of energy and stress the importance of developing alternative sources of energy. Take a look at the joint project with the British Embassy.
British Council Ukraine practices a ‘Green Office’ policy. This means that we use scrap paper for internal documentation, print on both sides, make sure that computers, monitors, faxes and copiers are switched off when not in use, use plastic glasses sparingly and separate paper from other office waste for further recycling. Do you think your office can adopt similar principles of more care for our environment?
