The project was funded by the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Global Opportunities Fund and administered by the British Council in three pilot oblasts of Ukraine (Rivne, Zhytomyr and Lugansk) between 2005 and 2007.
We worked in close partnership with NGOs who implemented the project on the local level: 'Chayka' (Rivne), 'Women of Donbas' (Lugansk) and 'Women's Information & Consultation Centre' (Zhytomyr). The project focused on raising awareness of trafficking issues among Ukrainian law enforcement agencies, as well as improving cooperation between state structures and NGOs in anti-trafficking work.
Training programmes and round tables facilitated by partner NGOs reached more than 1 800 professionals including law enforcement personnel, social workers, education specialists and representatives of local administration.
Two study tours — one to Poland, and one to the UK — allowed representatives of law enforcement and NGOs to learn about the trafficking situation, share experiences and establish contacts with their counterparts in other countries.
Three multidisciplinary teams of trainers were trained by consultants from La Strada Poland.
A training programme for social workers and psychologists on raising awareness of trafficking issues among young people was conducted by a UK consultant Linda Regan from London Metropolitan University.
NGO partners conducted awareness seminars on HIV and trafficking for vulnerable children in boarding houses, shelters, summer camps and vocational training schools.
An International Anti-Trafficking Conference in February 2007 was attended by UK Minister for Europe Geoff Hoon, representatives of UK Human Trafficking Centre and La Strada Poland and brought together high officials and practitioners working in the field of counter-trafficking.
A number of publications were produced:
- WHO Ethical and Safety Recommendations for Interviewing Trafficked Women (the Ukrainian translation) — a useful reading for anyone dealing with victims of trafficking
- What I Need to Know about the Criminal Process: Handbook for Victims of Trafficking in People (in Russian and Ukrainian), a set of cards (in Russian and Ukrainian) explaining the stages of the criminal process, the rights and responsibilities of each participant and giving advice to victims on how to testify in court. The pack was developed and published in partnership with International Organisation for Migration
- an updated version (4th edition) of Work Abroad: Expectations and Reality brochure for anyone planning to look for employment abroad. The publication provides useful tips on what you need to think about and do before going to work in another country and what can help you to stay safe
- Forum Theatre: A Tool For Finding Solutions When Working In Crisis Situations — a handbook describing how the interactive methodology of forum theatre can be used in prevention and reintegration of victims of any form of violence.
