To develop a sustainable system of English Language Training and Testing in the Ukrainian Armed Forces and wider security sector in order to enhance the role Ukraine plays in international affairs in general and in particular by enabling a greater contribution to UN Peace Support Operations and humanitarian/disaster relief activities.
 Our activities in Ukraine
We work with the main military and police educational institutes in Ukraine on a range of areas:
- course and syllabus design
- materials development
- placement and needs analysis testing
- teacher training.
Our main partners are: The National Defence Academy (Kyiv), Lviv Army Institute, Kharkiv Air Force University and Sevastopol Naval Institute. We also work with Ukraine’s main peacekeeper training centres: the Multi-National Staff Officers Centre and the Ministry of Internal Affairs UN Police Training Centre on organising specialist language training reflective of the needs of UN peacekeeping personnel.
Four military institutes (in Kharkiv, Lviv, Sevastopol and Zhytomyr) operate Self-Access Centres (SACs). All the SACs provide access to the internet, Computer Assisted Language Learning software, reading and audio-visual materials. There are also centres for future peacekeeping personnel in Kyiv at the Ukrainian Multi-National Staff Officers Centre (military) and National University of Internal Affairs (UN police). These provide specialist materials related to the language of UN Peace Support Operations.
Together with the Ukrainian MoD we run ICELT courses (In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching) for teachers from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence and Ministry of the Interior and Moldovan Ministry of Defence. These courses are held on an annual basis and lead to an internationally-recognised teaching certificate. In addition over 100 teachers of English from military institutes across Ukraine receive regular in-house training delivered by trainers trained by PEP.
Working with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence in providing advice and guidance on the development of a testing system based on STANAG 6001 specifications. These tests are used to select candidates for UN peacekeeping missions and other positions within the armed forces requiring English language skills.
Supporting intensive English courses for officers in main military institutes and organising and delivering pre-deployment language training for peacekeepers, professional language training for civilian employees of the Ukrainian MoD and one to one tuition for generals.
Working with Peacekeeping English Project in other countries to produce tailor-made materials for military, security and enforcement services.
The project is funded by the UK Ministry of Defence, the Department for International Development and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
