Active Citizens

What is Active Citizens programme about?

Active Citizens is a British Council programme in the area of intercultural dialogue and global citizenship. This is an international initiative which involves a number of countries in Europe; including Ukraine.

This programme aims to contribute to social change and sustainable development by establishing an enduring international network of leaders who as influencers in their communities shape the dialogue addressing global issues. It works with leaders of youth, women, cultural, recreational or religious groups, with NGOs or local governments, to build on their own skills and models. As a result, the programme supports grass-root initiatives around the world, and in turn promotes community cohesion and cross-cultural understanding.

Active Citizens programme includes: training workshops, exchange visits, social action projects which are developed and implemented by programme participants based on what they have learned. Projects developed by participants target particular problem areas in the community and contribute to a positive impact on its members.

Overall the programme participants make a significant contribution to social change within their communities and build new professional relationships.

A programme participant commented: “During the Active Citizens programme, we were learning from other Ukrainian leaders, sharing successes, and discussing how we can overcome difficulties we face. I was surprised by how similar our challenges are, even though we come from completely different regions of Ukraine. We all are dealing with the same issue: how to improve the development of our communities
