ILEC (International Legal English Certificate) is a new examination developed by Cambridge ESOL together with Translegal, Europe’s leading firm of lawyer-linguists. It is set at Levels B2 and C1 of the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework. ILEC is recognised by a number of European associations of law students and lawyers.
ILEC was created to meet the needs of both employers and lawyers. It is also suitable for law students intending to follow courses which include a significant English language content – either in their own country or abroad.
ILEC is the right exam for you if you have good working knowledge of English and want to develop it for use in a legal environment.
British Council Ukraine offers the new Legal English course suitable for students wishing to improve usage and understanding of the language of Law and take the ILEC exam. The course includes relevant exam practice. Check out course details and how to book a placement test.
The exam consists of four separate papers testing reading, writing, listening and speaking, which together last just under 3.5 hours (not including breaks). The Speaking test is conducted face-to-face by qualified oral examiners.
ILEC is based on realistic tasks and topics that legal practitioners might expect to encounter in their daily working lives.
Written papers will be marked in the UK by Cambridge ESOL examiners. Test results are usually reported within six weeks of the test date.
