IELTS is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who want to study and work where English is used as the language of communication.
IELTS is accepted by institutions in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and increasingly in Canada, the USA and other countries
The test consists of 4 modules: Listening (about 30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11-14 minutes). All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking components, but different versions of the Reading and Writing components (General Training or Academic) depending on the reasons for which you need to sit an examination.
The General Training version covers basic language skills in a broad social and educational context and is meant for those who would like to work or study at a non-degree level as well as for immigration purposes.
The Academic version is intended for those who would like to pursue their academic studies in the medium of English.
The Speaking module has 3 main parts.
Part 1 Introduction and interview 4-5 minutes
|
Part 2 Individual long turn3-4 minutes (including 1 minute preparation time) |
Part 3 Two way discussion 4-5 minutes
|
| Examiner introduces him/herself and interviews candidate on familiar topics |
Examiner asks candidate to speak for 1-2 minutes on a particular topic. Examiner asks one or two questions at the end of the long turn |
Examiner invites candidate to participate in discussion of a more abstract nature, based on verbal questions thematically linked to Part 2. |
New. Changes to IELTS Writing rubrics from January 2006
Starting from May 2005, there were changes in global IELTS dates available to General Training and Academic candidates. The sessions marked by * in the table below are administered only for Academic candidates, the unmarked sessions are administered for both Academic and General Training candidates. For further information, please see also www.ielts.org.
There is a registration date for each examination session, as shown in the table below.
On the day of registration you must phone British Council in Kyiv on +380 44 490 5601 and register for the specified session. Registration starts at 0900, and it is recommended that candidates call as early as possible on the correct date to maximise their chances of registering successfully.
Before registering, you should familiarise yourselves with the format and content of the test because during registration you need to provide information on the module (Academic or General Training) you are going to take. Modules cannot be changed after registration.
Within a week after registering on the phone, you need to provide us with:
- an application form (two forms if you are taking the test for immigration purposes) either personally, by fax, mail or e-mail
- a copy (or two copies) of two forms of identity (two passports, passport and driving licence, etc.)
- two (or three) recent passport-sized photographs
- you must also pay the fee of 1080 Ukrainian hryvnya to the cash desk of the British Council.
Candidates who withdraw or fail to attend the test are not refunded.
If candidates fail to provide documents mentioned above and/or do not pay on time for the test, they will not be allowed to take the exam.

The results are presented in a Test Report Form as a score on a band scale from 1 from 9. Scores are given to each module as well as to the overall level. Each band is described in a statement which summarises the language skills of a candidate. There is no pass or fail mark. A candidate may re-take the test on any date available.
Starting from January 2008, candidates can have access to their results online on the 13th day after each test date. The results are available only for 28 days after the test date on ielts-results.britishcouncil.org. Please note that online IELTS results are provisional and should not be used as an official confirmation of IELTS scores.
The Test Report Form is available on the 13th day after the exam date. No information about the results can be given over the telephone. One original copy is sent to a candidate by mail or given to him/her personally upon request. (Up to 5 copies may be sent to an institution specified by a candidate at his or her request. If more than 5 copies are needed, an additional fee is charged). A Test Report Form is usually deemed to be valid for two years.
Starting from 1 November 2002, a one-day IELTS intensive workshop is available to all those interested in familiarising themselves with the test format and developing effective test techniques. The workshop is offered on fixed dates from 10.00 till 17.00 in Kyiv. The fee is GBP 15 payable in hryvnias at the British Council book-keeping rate. More information >>
A set of “IELTS Specimen Materials” is available at the British-Council to help those who are going to take IELTS in self-preparation. It includes a handbook and a CD-rom. The price is GBP 10.00 payable in hryvnias at the British-Council book-keeping rate.
