How to use our services
Access to a virtual library from home
Welcome to the British Council in Odessa!
Membership is open to everyone 16 years old and over.  Information service in the Centre is free. To borrow materials, however, you will need to become a member of the Centre.

How to join?

  • Complete an application form.
  • Show your passport.
  • Pay the annual membership fee.


What will it cost me to join the Centre for one year?

General annual membership 250 UAH
General half-year membership 150 UAH
Student annual membership 160 UAH
Daily ticket
(to have access to e-subscriptions
and multimedia English language programmes;
to listen to music CDs
and  to view educational and documentary
films on the premises)
10 UAH
Institutional membership 500 UAH

What does membership give me?

An access to:

  • Internet, e-subscriptions and English language learning multimedia( CDs) on public computers in the centre
  • a virtual library from your home or office – articles from thousands of journals on management, economics, political science, media and more
  • books  and audio resources for loan including materials for English language learning and teaching, business administration textbooks, general information resources, modern British fiction
  • educational, documentary and feature films for loan( VHS and DVD);
  • educational and documentary films for viewing in the centre
  • music CDs for loan
  • British newspapers and magazines
  • reference materials including dictionaries, encyclopaedia, albums, directories and materials on UK education.

How many items may I borrow?

You may borrow up to 2 books (but only 1 ELT set) from our loans stock + 1 audio item (music CD/ talking book) + 1 film (VHS or DVD) at a time.

How long may I keep borrowed items?

  • Books and audio materials may be borrowed for 3 weeks if you live in Odessa or for up to 6 weeks if you live outside Odessa.
  • Films may be borrowed for up to 1 week at a time.

Renewal of loans may be granted once unless another member has reserved the item.

What happens if…

… I return a borrowed item late?

  • For each day that a book/audio item is overdue, a fine of 0.50 UAH will be charged.
  • For each day that a film is overdue, a fine of 1.00 UAH will be charged.

Please see the date label on the item for the expiry date of your loan.

… I lose my membership card?

  • Please report the loss of your membership card immediately.
  • We may reissue your membership card but you will be asked to pay a fee of 10.00 UAH to cover this.
  • Your replacement card will be valid for the same period as your lost card.

… I damage or lose a resource of the Centre?

You will be required to pay the full cost of the item.

Other services available in our Centre.

Reservation service

  • If you would like to borrow an item that is currently on loan, please, complete a Reservation Form available in the Centre.
  • Items reserved will be kept for 1 week before being released for general loan.

Photocopying

  • You may make photocopies of the Centre’s materials only by using a photocopy card available at the Issue Desk.
  • A4 copies cost 0.20 UAH per sheet, A3 copies cost 0.40 UAH per sheet.
  • British copyright law applies to all copies made.

Internet access

       You may reserve access to these facilities in advance.  During busy periods access will be restricted to an hour at a time.

Please do…

  • leave you coats and bags in the cloakroom
  • inform us of any change in your address or any other data required for Membership
  • abide by the above rules and regulations, failure to do so may result in the cancellation of your membership.

You may not...

  • change the configuration of the system and programmes installed on our computers
  • install software programmes of any kind
  • remove programmes installed by the British Council
  • access unauthorised or offensive web-sites
  • remove from the premises any materials without the prior consent of a member of staff
  • bring food or drink into the Centre.

All charges are subject to revision.
