The British Council manages the Modern Language Assistants programme and facilitates the placement of students to a wide range of institutions throughout Northern Ireland. In 2011-2012, 100 assistants from 9 different countries were appointed.
Modern Language Assistants appointed to Northern Ireland are contracted to work for a nine-month placement from 1 September – 31 May. The timetable can vary from a minimum of twelve hours to a maximum of eighteen hours per week. Placements often involve working in more than one institution.
Modern Language Assistants are expected to work with the class teacher and whole class or on their own with small groups of students. Their role is to help students to develop their language acquisition by delivering a range of activities in a fun and informative way.
In return, Assistants have the unique opportunity of living and working in Northern Ireland, gaining an insight into the education system, developing their command of the English language and acquiring an understanding of the country’s complex history.
The rate of allowance for 2011-12 was £879 gross per month. The rate for 2012-13 will be confirmed in due course by the Department of Education. In Northern Ireland, Assistants are paid by their school or by their appointed Education and Library Board:
We provide local support and advice on all aspects of the assistantship throughout the year. In addition, a series of briefing meetings and events are organised for assistants during their placement year.
Further information is available on our Language Assistants website or at FLAs online.
