Frequently asked questions

Here you will find all you need to know about studying in the UK, including information on qualifications, applications and visas.

How do I apply?

We can assist with application procedures at all levels of study to the UK institutions free of charge.

For undergraduate first degree courses (BSc, BA), applications are made through UCAS application forms.

For postgraduate courses (Masters and PhD levels), applicants must apply directly or use the British Council Postgraduate application forms.

For application to schools and further education courses, applicants must apply directly or use The British Council Further Education application forms.

When should I apply?
As early as possible since most academic courses start in September/October, it is advisable to apply a year in advance, especially for undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses. Applications to other courses such as A-Levels, diploma, professional, and postgraduate research courses can be made at any time before they commence.
How are universities ranked?

There is no official ranking system for UK institutions. However, the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and the Quality Assessment of Teaching (TQA) are quality systems that can give you useful advice about courses and institutions. Both of these systems focus on individual subjects and/or programmes of study and offer judgements on quality in the form of ratings. The assessment method used for both is peer review by specialists of high standing in their subjects.

Are UK qualifications recognised in Uganda?

In general, all the UK qualifications are recognised in Uganda by the government and professional bodies. If you need further clarification about your qualifications, please contact the appropriate professional body or UNEB:

Where do I get information about UK institutions?
You can pay a visit to our Education UK web site. There is a guide to help you take a tour around the UK institutions.
When are the other intakes, apart from September/October?
Pre-university courses at colleges tend to have intakes in January, February and sometimes April. Some universities have an intake in January for selected undergraduate courses. We have produced a list of institutions that have intakes other than September/October.
Where do I get information about scholarships to study in the UK?

For undergraduate courses, you can pay a visit to a searchable database of undergraduate scholarships offered by academic institutions, commercial organisations and charitable trusts.

For postgraduate courses, please visit our scholarships section where you obtain information on applying for the Chevening, Rhodes, FCO Leeds/Kulika Charitable Trust Scholarships and many more.  The scholarships cover the full cost of tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, modest allowances to cover books, warm clothing and thesis, and a return airfare.
