The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for educational and cultural relations.
We were founded on 5 November 1934 when Rex Leeper, a civil servant, signed a piece of paper which created the ‘British Committee for Relations with Other Countries’. The name changed to The British Council shortly afterwards. We opened our first overseas representation in Cairo in 1938, followed in the same year by Lisbon, Bucharest and Warsaw.
We build relationships and understanding between people in the UK and other countries and increase appreciation of the UK’s ideas and achievements overseas. The areas we focus on are creativity, education and civil society.
Our operations began in 1952 providing the best information possible on knowledge concerning UK literature, education and culture. The office in Kampala was closed in 1974 but re-opened in 1983. Since then, our services attract more members and clients each year. British Council meets aspirations of young learners by creating opportunities in education, English language learning and cultural exchange. We work with our partners, both in country and in the UK, to showcase UK excellence, innovation and creativity. We are a major channel for the UK's public diplomacy in the region– putting people in touch with people in the UK. We work for the benefit of the individual and for the mutual benefit of UK and Uganda.
We are based in Kampala.
Association with the British Council provides opportunities for international networking, links with British individuals and organisations, as well as opportunities for market positioning and enhancing corporate images and reputation. We work with both local and international partners. For more information you should contact us.
In the UK the British Council is registered as a charity (not-for-profit-organisation) and operates as an executive non-departmental public body. We receive a grant from the British Government and are represented in 109 countries and 218 towns and cities worldwide.
Our patron is Her Majesty The Queen and our Vice-Patron is His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales.
