Raising the awareness towards Climate Change

ZeroCarbonCity is a global British Council two year campaign aimed at raising awareness and stimulating debate around climate change and the challenges we face, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to tackling climate change. It has been developed as a result of extensive research both in the UK and overseas. The campaign was launched in the UK in early March 2005 and will be visiting over 60 countries around the world with a variety of activities taking place and campaign resources available.

In Turkey, British Council is running the campaign with the support of Turkish Ministry of Environment and Forestry and in partnership with Regional Environment Centre (REC Turkey).

The campaign is launched by displaying the NorthSouthEastWest (NSEW) Photo Exhibition during the Effects of Climate Change on Turkey and Turkish Industry Panel organised by Ministry of Environment and Forestry and TOBB (The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey) on 22 November 2005.

NorthSouthEastWest (NSEW) Exhibition is part of the British Council ZeroCarbonCity campaign that aims to increase public understanding of global climate change by demonstrating the challenges facing the world resulting from the activities of mankind. Ten of the world's top photographers from Magnum Photographic Agency were commissioned to capture images from ten diverse countries around the world to illustrate not only the impacts of climate change, but also the solutions which are being implemented to reduce carbon emissions in communities north, south, east and west.
Paul Brown, the editor of the exhibition book, gave a speech at a panel on 26 May 2006 at British Council, Ankara, on the topic of Communicating Science to the Public ‘Climate Change as a Case Study’. Participants from various universities, NGOs and Ministry of Environment & Forestry were present to listen Paul Brown as well as Pavel Antonov (Chief Editor of Green Horizon, magazine of REC) and Dr. Baha Kuban (Board Member, Science and Technology Policy Research Association) during the panel. The video of the event will be available here soon.

The photograph exhibition will visit various science and culture centres, universities and schools initially in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir then on an extended tour in Turkey, lasting until mid 2007. Not only the photographs but also the exhibition brochure provides essential information and raises awareness of the challenges of climate change.
