
The Famelab Competition administered by The British Council and Metu Science and Society Centre was conducted at the Metu Culture and Convention Centre on the 6 th of May, 2008. Turkey selected the Science Delegate who represented the country at the Cheltenham Science Festival in the UK in June.2008
The presenter of the competition was Celal Pir, also widely known from the famous NTV talkshow ‘Yakın Plan’. Members of jury consisted of the METU Rector Ural Akbulut, METU Associate Rector Canan Çilingir, Editor in Chief of Radikal Newspaper İsmet Berkan, Administrative coordinator of Radyo ODTÜ and one of the presenters of the ‘Modern Sabahlar’ programme Oktay Demirci, and style consultant Özlem Çakır.

The winner of the competition was Deniz Demiryürek, a professor at Hacettepe Medical Faculty. Besides winning the laptop award, he also gained the right to compete at the Ceheltenham Science Festival in the UK. He will be competing with other finalists from the eight other South East Europe countries. His simple presentation on reflux explained us this health problem in the most understandable way.

İbrahim Özay Semerci, a chemistry teacher in the TED Polatlı school, completed the competition in the second place and won a video camera with his presentation on ‘Carbide’. He explained the daily usage of ‘Carbide’ in our lives with his symphatic attidude and effective supportive materials.

Rıdvan Yılmaz, a physics teacher attending the Famelab Competition from Dubai completed the competition in the third place and won an Ipod. He gained the jury’s appretiation with his energetic attitude and effective time management while supporting his presentation with impressive visual content, basing the subject on the physical and chemical changes of dust, exposing it’s secrets.
