Rivers of the World is the flagship art and education project of The Mayor’s Thames Festival in London,UK. Delivered in partnership with the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms and with support from HSBC Global Education Trust, the project links schools and over 2,000 young people around the world each year through common river themes. In 2010, France, Hungary, India, Thailand, Turkey and the USA participated in the project and 6 schools from each country were linked to schools in London.
In Istanbul and London, pupils studied the Bosphorus and River Thames and worked with professional artists to create stunning artworks for public display. The pupils’ findings provided inspiration for drawings, paintings, photographs and other media and a chosen design style helped to channel and focus creativity. The themes of the artworks were based on the history, geography, culture and environment of the river city.
After these workshops with kids, all of these artworks were displayed in the London Thames Festival and different venues of Istanbul. During these exhibitions more than 3 million people saw the artworks of the kids from Turkey and UK.
With the support of the Ministry of National Education, Istanbul Ferry Lines and Anadolu Kültür, the exhibition took take place in different venues of Istanbul. During these exhibitions, creative activities on Rivers and Bosphorus took place with the support of Pace Kids Art Centre.
The project will be completed in 2012 with joint curriculum activities between the Turkish and UK schools.
