The British Government’s ‘British Chevening Scholarships’ are among the most prestigious awards available to international students for study in the United Kingdom. The scholarships, which are named after Chevening House in Kent, the official country residence of the Foreign Secretary, are available in more than 150 countries, including Turkey. There are over 1300 new Chevening scholarships globally each year.
Chevening scholarships are a great way of gaining access to high-quality education. They offer an ideal opportunity for scholars not only to study their chosen subject, but also to meet and network with their peers in the unique learning atmosphere that the UK provides. Many talented young Turks have been propelled along the path to success through the British Chevening awards.
The programme is highly competitive. Applicants are assessed according to the merit of their applications, including their leadership ability, past achievements, qualifications (both academic and professional) and their English language ability.
Scholars are chosen on the basis that they will become opinion-formers and decision-makers, who will be able to make a difference in their country of origin. Successful applicants will demonstrate ambition, drive and leadership potential, a commitment to change and organisational development, talent for innovation, creativity and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.
Candidates are selected by the British Embassy, together with partner organisations. The programme is managed by the British Council, on behalf of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The Chevening programme in Turkey is the largest in Europe. Since it began in 1988, over 1550 Turkish scholars have studied in the UK under the British Chevening Scholarship scheme. They now hold positions of responsibility in public administration and government, international organisations, journalism, commerce, science and education, and within the Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) community.
Some of our scholarships are fully funded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth office, others are jointly funded. By working with our partners, Turkish Education Foundation (TEV) and HSBC, we are able to increase the size of the scholarship programme overall. We also work with the European Union Secretariat General to offer scholarships to civil servants working in areas linked to EU accession.
- Eligibility criteria are different for each Chevening programme, so please visit our website
