The following applies to British Chevening Scholarships sponsored wholly by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The scholarship will cover tuition fees for 12-month programmes.

Chevening scholarships are available for post-graduate level study for a minimum of 3 months and maximum of 1 year.  In UK most Master-level programmes are for 1 year only.

What do Chevening scholarships cover financially?

Chevening scholarships in Turkey are full scholarships that cover:

  • Pre-sessional English Training
  • IELTS test fees
  • Visa costs
  • Return Economy Airfare
  • Tuition fees
  • Thesis Allowances
  • Arrival & Departure Allowances
  • Stipend/Living allowance to cover subsistence and accommodation

Who can apply?

  • You must be a citizen of the Turkish Republic,
  • You must be a graduate, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or equivalent,
  • It is essential that you can communicate effectively in written and spoken English, (minimum IEL TS score of 6.5).
  • For the Pure Chevening programme, you must have at least 2 years relevant professional work experience.

Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Future leadership potential and the capacity to play an important role in Turkey's development
  • A clear sense of why studying in the UK would benefit both their career and their country
  • Ambition and drive
  • A commitment to change and organisational development
  • Innovation and creativity
  • An ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances

What areas of study does the scholarship cover?

  • European Studies
  • Political Science and International Relations
  • Public Administration
  • Human Rights and International Law
  • Migration
  • Economics  
  • Journalism and Media Studies
  • Environmental Studies
  • Energy Studies
  • Agriculture/food engineering
  • Defense studies

We may consider courses outside these areas in exceptional cases, if the applicant is able to demonstrate outstanding leadership potential and make the case for an alternative course of study.

Application Process

You should be sending your online application no later then 30th October 2009. Please be informed that you will not be asked for any supporting hard copy documents at this stage.

If you are shortlisted you will be notified no later then 13th of November and will be asked for supporting documents such as:

  • 3 recent photos,
  • Transcripts from your university ( in case you have a masters degree, please attach it as well),
  • Two reference letters in a sealed and signed envelope (professional or academic),
  • Photocopies of academic certificates,
  • Valid IELTS result if available, (please read below)
  • Birth certificate
  • Declaration of Health Form (available on www.britishcouncil.org.tr )

The deadline for submission of hard copy documents will be 27 November 2009.

After receiving your documents and if they are complete you will be invited for an interview. If you do not have an IELTS score during the time of application you will be asked to sit for one, if you are found successful in the interview.  The fee of the exam will be paid by British Council. We are aiming to inform the applicants of their final results no later then 1st of March.

Should you have a letter of offer from an institution?

If you have already been offered a place at a university you should include the offer letter in your application.  If not, the deadline for selected candidates to present their offer letters from UK institutions is 30 March 2010.

All documents must be in English or translated into English.
