The Peacekeeping English Project (PEP) is a partnership with the Turkish National Police funded by the UK Foreign Commonwealth Office. It aims to build on the current level of cooperation between Turkey and the UK in the areas of combating drugs trafficking, human trafficking, terrorism, organised crime and to support the civilian police preparing for deployment on NATO, EU and UN peace support operations. By developing English language training systems and capacity within Turkey’s law enforcement agencies, the project provides ELT support throughout the Turkish police training structure, reaching up to 60,000 police officers.

The project provides Police officers with specialised English language training in the form of pre-departure courses to prepare them for international training and overseas deployment. It also provides support for teacher training, curriculum and materials development in the Police Academy and the Police College in Ankara and the 24 Police National Vocational High schools throughout Turkey. During the course of the project we will be looking at developing online interactive English language programmes that can be accessed by officers and cadets across the country.

The project started in March 2007 and is expected to run for at least three years. During this time we also hope to provide ELT support for the Turkish Gendarmerie, border guards and customs officials.
