The winner of the British Council’s International Young Publishing Entrepreneur Competition was announced on 26 February at an award ceremony held at British Consulate, Istanbul.
Short listed finalists presented their experiences and projects to the jury that included Cem Erciyes (Cullture and Arts Editor, Radikal), Arman Fikri (Head of Executive Board, İnkılap Bookstore), Müge İplikçi (Writer, PEN Women Writers Committee), Tanay Burcu Ural Kopan (Managing Director & Editor in-Chief, Marsık Publishing), Ruth Ur (Director Creativity, British Council).
Nermin Mollaoğlu won the title “Young Publishing Entrepreneur of the Year, Turkey” for her entrepreneurial ability in the development of publishing sector in Turkey. Mollaoğlu worked for Yapı Kredi Publishing, YKY, as the foreign affairs and rights coordinator for three years. In June 2005 she decided to give up working for YKY since the Turkish market had been gathering more and more attention from foreign publishers all around the world. She founded Kalem Literary Agency which represents more than 60 renowned Turkish authors and many literary translators in Turkey as well as various foreign publishers. She is currently completing a Masters in Business Law, Istanbul Bilgi University (Turkey). Her thesis subject is the loopholes concerning the rights of authors and translators in Turkey.
In April 2009, Mollaoğlu travelled to the UK to represent Turkey and compete against representatives from other countries. The winner of the International Publishing Entrepreneur of 2009 is Andrés Barragán from Colombia.
