The idea of 40 Stations photography project was first created by photographer Muammer Yanmaz in December 2001. The project came to life when Selen Akcali agreed to manage and coordinate the project in Paris. Yanmaz photographed 40 Turkish intellectuals living in Paris in subway stations. The 40 Stations Paris project has been sponsored by the French Cultural Centre in Istanbul and presented in their art gallery in November 2003. 40 Stations Paris was then exhibited in Bursa in December 2003 and in Turkish Tourism Office in Paris in September 2005.
Following Paris, 40 Stations project was realised in New York. Just like the Paris project, 40 Stations New York aimed to photograph 40 Turkish-Americans living in New York in a subway station of their choice. The project came to life when Turkish Culture and Tourism Office, The Marmara Manhattan and Mavi Jeans joined in as co-sponsors. Other than Paris and New York 40 Stations project also includes other cities of the world as Berlin, London and Tokyo where artists, intellectuals and prominent business people of Turkish origin live.
40 Stations London Project has a different approach then the photographer Muammer Yanmaz’s previous projects, 40 Stations Paris and 40 Stations New York. A British photographer identified by BC London Visual Arts team also photographed 40 British people living in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. This way, the project has become reciprocal and reflected elements from both UK and Turkish cultures.
40 Stations is a unique touring project by Turkish photographer Muammer Yanmaz. Alongside commissioned UK photographer, Annabel Elston, the portraits demonstrate the personal links connecting the UK and Turkey and explores the identity, migration and roles of Turkish and UK individuals in two different major metropolitan centres. The exhibition first opened in London in 2007.
Now, after its first stop in London and in Istanbul, we are pleased to announce that 40 Stations: Portraits from Turkey and the UK Exhibition is taking place in Ankara!
