WHAT DOES THE BRITISH COUNCIL DO?

The British Council is the UK's main agency for creating stronger cultural relations with other countries.

We have been working in Turkey continuously since 1940, and have centres in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir and are also active throughout the rest of Turkey.

We believe in building sustainable relationships between people and institutions in the UK and Turkey because both countries benefit mutually.

Our work covers a vast range of areas from education to science and arts, and from work with civil society to government reform.

IS THERE A LIBRARY AT THE BRITISH COUNCIL?

As part of a wider strategic review we have closed our library operations in Istanbul, Ankara and in Izmir. We will instead be focussing our resources on expanding our work in specific developmental areas identified with the Turkish Ministry of National Education.

We continue to run all kinds of cultural events, plus conferences and seminars in such areas as education, arts, governance, science and sport, and well as the administration of thousands of UK examinations each year.

Our library collection in Istanbul has been presented to Istanbul Bilgi University and currently our former members are able to use and borrow some of the resources from Dolapdere campus. The full collection will be available at santralistanbul campus. In Izmir, we donated our library to Ekonomi University and members are using the resources.
