What does the scholarship cover?  Is it enough for me to survive in the UK?
The standard Chevening scholarship for a year is a maximum of £12,000 for University fees and every year, a figure is decided to cover living costs both in and outside of London. This is paid monthly. This year (07/08), the monthly figure is £915 for London and £737 for all other cities. This is generally enough for one person to live adequately. This will change next year.
Chevening/TEV scholarship provides up to £12,000 for University fees and TEV provides a living allowance. The amount is decided by TEV.
Do you find me a study place?
No, you contact the universities to find a place and bring the acceptance letter from them in support of your application.
What length of programme do you support? 3 months, 1 year or more than this?
You can select a 3-9 month research programme or a one year Masters degree.
Can I choose more than one of the specified areas?  For example, I am interested in Journalism and Human Rights and both are possible areas of study for my chosen career.
As long as the subjects are related in some way – yes.
Is a letter from my university confirming that I have graduated enough to apply?
Yes, you can apply with an official letter from your university as long as you satisfy all other conditions too, such as length of relevant work experience.
My first degree GPA is a little under 3 but I meet all of the other criteria – can I still apply?
Yes you can, but priority will be given to candidates with a GPA of 3 or more.
When can I submit my application?
Applications are received one year before. For example, applications for 2007- 08 academic year are received beginning from September 2006 until the last Friday in October 2006.
Can I study outside the United Kingdom?
No. Chevening scholarships are only awarded for study within the United Kingdom. Sometimes courses include short study visits outside of the United Kingdom and these are permissible.
Can I bring my family to the United Kingdom during my scholarship?
We strongly advise that you do not bring any family members to the United Kingdom during the period of your scholarship. Most of your time will be spent studying for your qualification. The period of study is very intense and it is important that you are able to give it your full attention. Chevening scholarships are designed for single people and there are no additional allowances for partners, spouses, children or other dependants.
Our stipends, which are offered at standard UK rates, are designed to allow you to live a comparable lifestyle to a single UK Postgraduate scholar (e.g. you should not expect to be able to run a vehicle etc).
Can I work permanently in the United Kingdom once my scholarship is finished?
No. Although many scholars do take a short break or choose to attend their graduation ceremony before returning home, it is envisaged that Chevening scholars will return home and contribute to the development of their country by implementing the new skills and knowledge acquired in the UK.
Chevening scholars agree when accepting their scholarship to return home at the scholarship conclusion.
How easy is it to obtain a ‘Visa’ for my period of study in the United Kingdom?
The Prime Minister has announced a more 'open-door' policy for international students. This initiative includes an improved service to help scholars meet immigration requirements, a streamlined visa process for scholars with completed applications and permission to stay granted for the whole course of study at the start.
