British Council Tunisia
Darwin Now

Darwin Now is the British Council’s contribution to the international celebration of the 200 year anniversary of Darwin’s birth (on the 12th February) and the 150 year anniversary of the publication of ‘On the Origin of Species’ (on the 24th November).

Charles Darwin is celebrated as one of the greatest scientists of all time, with his work forming the foundation of many different research fields, and yet his ideas still stir up debate. His ideas about evolution revolutionised scientific thought and had a profound influence around the world. Darwin Now will look at the impact of Darwin’s ideas and their impact on contemporary biology, medicine and society.  It comprises a year long programme of activity including outreach work and exhibitions in schools and further education colleges, a mobile exhibition, interactive website with and supporting workshops.  The campaign is expected to run in up to 50 countries worldwide, including the regions of Europe, North Africa, East Asia, America and Latin America.

In Tunisia, the British Council has offered a number of activities exploring the work of Darwin in celebration of his remarkable legacy. These have included lectures, workshops, scientific expeditions, seminars and film screening.

The Darwin Now programme culminated in a major international conference – Darwin’s Living Legacy – which took place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina from 14-16 November, 2009. It included world renowned academic speakers from over 30 countries who had explored the role of the evolutionary science in a range of areas including medicine, agriculture, biodiversity and the environment as well as its wider social and cultural context.  Following the Conference, an exhibition of the life and work of Charles Darwin will be open to public and school children.
