Business English Certificate (BEC)

If you are learning English for international business communication the Cambridge Business English Certificate (BEC) suite is for you. BEC exams focus on language use in real world business situations. There are three BEC levels. Each level concentrates on reading, writing, listening and speaking.

BEC levels

BEC Preliminary

This exam is aimed at lower-intermediate levels of competence. It is designed for the 17+ age group, both for those already working in a range of business fields and those who are preparing for a business career.

Reading and writing: 1 hour and 30 minutes

Listening: approximately 40 minutes

Speaking: 12 minutes

BEC Vantage

This exam assesses language ability used in the context of business at upper intermediate level. It is equivalent in level to the FCE examination in general English, which is also offered by Cambridge ESOL.

Reading: 1 hour

Writing: 45 minutes

Listening: approximately 40 minutes

Speaking: 14 minutes

BEC Higher

This exam is aimed at advanced students and is equivalent in level to the CAE. Success in this exam shows that you are able to engage in extended conversation, contribute effectively to meetings and seminars, write reports, and communicate successfully in a business context.
