TKT - Teaching Knowledge Test
What is TKT?

This is a new teacher training certificate test from Cambridge University for teaching English to speakers of other languages. It aims to increase teachers' confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners. This flexible and accessible award will help you to understand:

different methodologies for teaching
the 'language of teaching'
the ways in which resources can be used
the key aspects of lesson planning
classroom management methods for different needs.
Who is TKT for?

TKT is ideal for all teachers, whatever your background and teaching experience. It’s also suitable for people who would like to teach English but do not yet have a teaching position.

Candidates taking TKT will normally have some experience of teaching English to speakers of other languages. TKT may also be taken by:

pre-service teachers
teachers who wish to refresh their teaching knowledge
teachers who are moving to teaching
English after teaching another subject

There are no formal entry requirements. However, anyone wishing to take TKT is strongly advised to have at least an intermediate level of English - level B1 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

What does TKT involve?

TKT has three core modules. These can be taken together in one exam session or separately, in any order, over three sessions. Each module consists of a test of 80 objective questions, lasting 80 minutes, which require you to select the correct answer and mark this on a computerised answer sheet.

Module 1 - Language and background to language learning and teaching

Describing language and language skills.
Background to language learning.

Module 2 - Planning lessons and use of resources for language teaching

Planning and preparing a lesson or sequence of lessons.
Selection and use of resources and materials.

Module 3 - Managing the teaching and learning process

Teachers' and learners' language in the classroom.
Classroom management.
HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR TKT?

There are many websites to help you prepare for your exams.

  • Cambridge ESOL candidate support.: The new Cambridge ESOL's website for candidates where you will find handbooks and sample papers to download for free and many more support materials
  • Check out our online resources. Attentively, you can take a preparation course.

Exam preparation courses

The course will be 27 hours long over 9 weeks. The classes will take place on Saturday mornings from 09:30 – 12:45. Planned course dates are as follows:

  • Autumn term :Starting on 25th September 2010
  • Winter term: Starting on 4th December 2010

Fees:

The course fees will be 285 TD per module per participant * Books and all other materials are included.

How can I register for TKT?
  • Complete the TKT.application form with your full details and write your name as it should appear on the certificate.
  • Attach one recent photograph
  • Attach VALID proof of your identity at registration
  • Make sure to hand in the completed application form along with the correct payment to our reception in our premises before the test and by the mentioned deadline for each test session.

What are the costs?

The exam will be 85TD per module per participant.

TKT Module 2,will start on December 10th 2011, deadline for registration 17 October 2011.
